What does hail damage look like on shingles?

What is the documentation timeline?
Within 7 days of the storm: contractor walk with date-stamped photos of every elevation and chalked test squares (10 by 10 feet) marking hail strikes per square. Within 14 days: file the claim with photos attached. Within 30 days: adjuster meeting onsite with the contractor present. Wait longer than this and carriers can argue the damage was pre-existing.
Will hail damage that is purely cosmetic be paid?
Generally no. Florida carriers settle functional damage (compromised water shedding) and dispute cosmetic damage. The contractor's job is to document where cosmetic crosses into functional, which on hail-bruised shingles happens once the asphalt mat is exposed and UV begins breaking it down.
